Orange Light Over Mansfield Road Derby UK

Date: October 27, 2010
Time: 6:45 p.m.

Last night I witnessed an orange light in the sky. It appeared strange, so I got out of my car to observe. The object passed directly overhead and then disappeared.

Height: Difficult to estimate the height, but would guess 1000 - 2000 feet.

Direction and speed of travel: Travelling in a north-easterly direction at approximately 100 knots (very rough guess as the height is also a rough estimate).

Description: The light was bright orange and steady with a 'cone' of orange light beneath it, similar to a searchlight, but only a very short cone. This cone appeared to be 'looking' from left to right either side of the direction of travel, and as it passed overhead appeared to be looking behind and again swaying either side of its flight path. There was no noise, no flashing lights, no other lights visible and no other shape apart from the light source, although difficult to confirm this as it was dark. Approximately 15 seconds after passing overhead it simply disappeared - there had been no deviation from its flight path or changes in speed prior to the disappearance.

I have no idea what this object was - it certainly was not a Chinese lantern, since it moved too quickly, it's light was much too strong and steady and it travelled in a perfectly straight line.

I have over 5000 hours flying Tornado and Hercules aircraft in the RAF, but still cannot identify what this might have been, which was why I looked on the Internet to see if there had been similar sightings.

Just thought this might interest you. Yours.
