Time: Between 11:30 p.m. -12:00 a.m.
I also was having a NYE party last night, when I went out to smoke on the balcony and warn people the countdown was close. Several people were watching the exact orange glowing lights coming from the east slowly and then another would fallow.
We saw at least four between 11:30 p.m. -12:00 a.m. (12-31-11- New Years) I thought maybe a flare gun or Chinese lanterns, but there's no way. They looked more like fireballs. After some Googling I saw a blog with hundreds of posts from all around the world that saw the same thing.
I live on the beach in Santa Cruz California. No answers though.

Last night I saw an orange ball of light traveling across the sky at Pleasure Point. It came towards us at the left, traveled to the right and shot out into the sky until it disappeared. My neighbor saw two balls of orange light, then the single ball of orange light and described it as the same movements. All just before 8pm. Very strange.....
