Navy Personal Observe A 30 Foot In Diameter Red UFO From The USS Preserver

Date:  1984
Time:  Evening.

In 1984 I was a US Navy Diver stationed on board the USS Preserver, ARS-8. We were on a routine excursion to Pensacola, FL from our home port in Little Creek, VA to recover the wreck of a downed Navy Trainer, A-4 I believe.

En route headed south just east of Cape Hatteras we noticed that our stern running light was out and needed to replace it as dusk was approaching.

The aft third of an ARS is all salvage deck and diving space (hydraulic and electrical gear below along with the diving locker) and as such was our responsibility for all maintenance and repairs.

Not a big deal as all that was needed was to lower the flag staff and replace the bulb. The evening meal was being served on the mess decks and while we were changing out the bulb and BS-ing when we saw what appeared to be a flare off to the east.

Oddly enough the 'flare' rose in the sky, disappeared or extinguished then reappeared and whizzed off in a near vertical motion.

This was most unusual, but since we thought it was a flare, we reported it to the bridge as a normal course of procedure. We were speculating on the odd occurrence and why a 'flare' would behave in such a peculiar manner.

Could it have been a UFO? Our fellow sailors were now coming out of the galley, one by one and were gathering as we were describing what had happened.

For the most part everyone thought we were just being ignorant and dismissed our speculations as just that.

By now it was dark and a very clear night. While in the midst of our banter between divers and the rest of the crew, one of the non-partisans to our little story became pale and his eyes opened as if he had just seen a ghost.

He pointed into the sky off the starboard gunwale and we all saw it, a red orb.

This light reminds me for all the world like the little trailing red UFO on Close Encounters (I am just watching it for the umpteenth time which is what caused me to look up 'glowing red light UFO' on Google.

This red orb hung with us for awhile and seemed to be about 30' in diameter, though it had no real form.

Our boat only ran at about 13 knots, so this thing was just keeping pace and made not a single sound. We all hustled up to the signal bridge to try to catch a glimpse through the "big eyes", the mounted binocular telescope used by the signal watch.

While on the signal bridge (which happens to be directly above the bridge of the ship where Ops and the Captain are situated) we could hear radio chatter from Coast Guard vessels and other vessels calling the Preserver to inquire about the contact that was showing exactly on our position.

In almost an instant the red orb took off at what seemed like an unimaginable speed again with no sound.

We spent the rest of the night looking up towards the heavens, but never saw another thing like the red orb that would mark its place in our memories for the rest of our lives!

USS Fort Mandan LSD 21 - 1952 UFO Sighting

First email:

Hooray, I am not blind as my CO called me in circa Feb 1952. I was on air watch aboard USS Fort Mandan LSD 21.

We were located approxamatly 400 miles east of New Jersey on Maneuvers. I spotted exactly what Chester saw.

I reported it as the Gondola of a Blimp. The CO said there were no Blimps within 500 miles. Then I heard him whisper Blind SOB!

Second email:

As far as I can remember, and I do remember it well, it was a partly cloudy day, cold and windy.

The surface was usual for the N. Atlantic, a little rough but not bad. I remember the clouds as I thought maybe I saw some weird kind of reflection of a Blimp from over the horizon, especially since they told me there was nothing on Radar and not a Blimp around.

I still distinctly remember that it looked like, a long Blimp Gondola and it had windows. I did not see the Gas Bag, I figured a cloud covered it.

I would estimate it at 1/2 to 3/4 miles away. I followed it a bit and then reported aircraft off the Port Beam. When I reported, I took my Binoculars off my eyes, After the report, I could no longer find the object. I figured it went into the clouds.

I was on the bridge about 15 feet from the Captain about 65 feet above the water.

Ten years ago I was stationed aboard USS Shadwell LSD 15 the same class and age ship and stood on the same spot and remembered that day.

I never heard of a UFO so at the time,I merely believed that I had seen a blimp. I don't know of anyone else that saw it, however, This month I am going to a reunion of that ships crew so I will ask around.

Renamed: NAFKRATOUSSA L-153

LSD-21 update recieved on 2/20/00 The following information was received from a Greek sailor serving onboard the Fort Mandan: Regretfully I announce you the decommisioning of HNS (Hellenic Navy Ship) NAFKRATOUSSA, LSD of the Cabildo Class, on the end of February 2000.

I cannot recall right now what the ship's name originally was, Ill look in my books, but it was built in 1945, and until today on active duty.

After having completed nearly 50 years of service life, the ship was the last 2 years in a desolate condition with no spare parts for most of its devices and corrosion as much as 2/3 of wall thickness.

The ship is to be stored either in Salamis or Crete naval stations and sold as scrap later on. I am searching for other witnesses for both these time frames ( 1952 -1958 ) and would like to discuss if they had seen anything unusual at these times.

If anyone can help, please contact me (Brian) at: v_factor_paranormal@live.com Thank you very much.

If anyone has witnessed the UFO/Object, please send me an email with details of what you saw. Please remember to include the date and time and location. (Town/City – State or Province) and as much detail as possible.
