Full Description of Event/Sighting: I was with my family (extended family as well) and we were sitting around a table and checking the sky every so often because people were celebrating the 4th of July. One of my cousins noticed a bright light and pointed it out to the rest of us. It was about 30 degrees above the horizon. It was very far away and was moving slowly, so we were thinking it was an airplane or something along those lines. As it approached, it became clear that it was not an airplane.
It was moving in a northerly direction, about 20 degrees off of true north. It was pretty bright, and with a bit of a yellowish tinge, and had an orange (slightly dimmer) tail, the tail was not long, only about a quarter of the length of the entire thing. It was very high (based on size and apparent speed), and it seemed to move slowly.
There was no discernible noise. It took about 4 minutes for it to pass over us. We lost sight of it over a house, about 40 degrees above the horizon (on the other side of us). It was visible for about 4 minutes. I had originally thought it was a asteroid, meteor, or satellite burning up in the atmosphere, but it was visible for far too long.
If you have seen anything like this in the same area please be kind enough to contact Brian Vike at: sighting@telus.net with the details of your sighting. All personal information is kept confidential.
