Date: January 1, 2011
Time: 12:45 a.m - 12:50 a.m.12:45-12:50 AM last night - sober - wife, daughter and I saw fairly bright, two orange lights over point of the mountain area south of Draper, UT. Movement slow at 25-30 degrees off horizon in SW sky and I asked wife what she supposed they were, as I did not have a clue.
She suggested perhaps hang/Para gliders with lanterns which is as good a guess as any. Not helicopter and not aircraft on approach to KSLC. Not small aircraft. We got home 30 seconds later while still observing.
After exiting the vehicle, noted both objects/lights were at high altitude and moving congruently (in loose formation) NNW at slow rate. We determined not hang/Para gliders and at approx. 45-50 degrees off the horizon and due west of our position in Draper, light/object furthest west began to move WNW accelerating to a high rate of speed and dimming and eventually disappearing behind high cirrus cloud deck.
Other remained stationary for approximately five seconds and while stationary, began dimming out until gone (approximately 5 additional seconds).
Quals: - 51 year old - 650 hour private pilot - fly experimental homebuilt - born skeptic - first time seeing something I could not explain.
